Roses Flung Riotously

Perhaps the best compliment one can pay an engraved gun, especially a high-art gun, is to fawn over it. Watching a collector pour over an embellished rifle recently-the double resting in his hands the way a sacred book lies in the palms of the pious-I was struck not only by his palpable pleasure but

The Norfolk Liar

Cruise the aisles at Safari Club International, The Vintage Cup or the Gold Medal Concours with one of these trinkets on a lanyard around your neck, and you're guaranteed of conversation. The Americans will ask "What is it?" and the Brits will say, "A Norfolk Liar! Where'd you find that?"

Winchester Model 23 Article - an invaluable resource

I recently tracked down Larry Brown’s excellent article on Winchester Model 23 side-by-side shotguns in the Jane/Feb 2004 issue. Numerous forums and You Tube videos cite this article as one of the best sources of information about these rare shotguns, but SSM’s own website does not reproduce this article online (as they do with many other fine and interesting topics) or clearly identify it in the index for the 2004 Jan/Feb edition. I would urge SSM to post the article separately as they have done with many other articles and to update the index for the 2004 Jan/Feb edition so the article can be more easily located on the SSM website for those who want to purchase a back copy. Winchester’s own records for the Model 23 consist mostly of catalogs, but no serial numbers or model/variation information is available — Larry’s article is still the only place you can find this information (and some beautiful pics of the higher end Model 23’s!). I'm glad back copies are still available!
